First, some historical context: When humans began to own things, we required violence to protect that ownership. This need for violence gave power to violence specialists — warlords that bartered their protection for your personal rights. This evolved into Pharoahs and, eventually, governments with complex legal systems that extend their powers far beyond simple protection.

This has become society’s norm: the world’s most economically productive countries maintain the world’s most powerful armies.

Why is this a problem? Governments can decide who you can buy or sell from, force you to pay taxes you may not agree with, freeze funds with a phone call, or inflate away the value of your wealth with an extra zero on a spreadsheet. Our ability to freely own property that we value, and have worked hard for, is at stake.

Enter Bitcoin. Satoshi created an asset that can be safely stored and traded without the need to protect it with violence. Cryptographic proof protects your ownership. You can freely control and trade it — intermediaries can’t freeze it, and governments can’t inflate away its value. This allows us to imagine a world where no one can easily control or seize your wealth.

But this isn’t enough to keep us from reverting to old violence meta-structures. We still need to interact with present-day society.
